Inspirational stories from the NBA draft

The 2019 NBA draft began on Thursday in Brooklyn and was full of heartwarming and inspirational stories. As each player was drafted to their respective future team, they were interviewed and told stories about their struggle, inspiration, and how it led them to be drafted to an NBA franchise. These stories go to show the importance of good parenting and motivational values.

Perhaps the most emotional moment of the night came from Zion Williamson, who was picked first overall by the New Orleans Pelicans. Zion has been in the spotlight since he was in high school, and has never been an overly emotional person. However, upon finally being drafted, Zion broke down into tears next to his mother on stage and discussed how her sacrifices allowed him to pursue his dreams. It was a beautiful and inspirational sight to behold.

The next two picks, Ja Morant and RJ Barrett, had emotional moments with their fathers. ESPN’s Steven A. Smith commented on how important this was for the black community in a tweet, given the negative stereotype about black fathers. Smith’s tweet includes a video of RJ Barrett crying on his father’s shoulder. Both of the drafts picks stated that they were heavily encouraged and pushed to succeed by their fathers.

Kevin Porter Jr., who was drafted 30th overall in the first round had a tragic, but inspirational story. Kevin Porter, his father, was shot when he was young, and he was taken care of by his single mother. Porter’s mother inspired him to be successful and not to stray down the wrong paths. Being drafted by an NBA team was a huge moment for Porter as a symbol of success despite the premature loss of his father.

These inspirational stories from the NBA draft go to show how important good parenting and coaching is. Almost every player stated that their success was a direct result of both of these. This is consistent with more than just basketball as well. Good parenting and coaching can go a long way in determining how successful a person will become.

Zion Williamson, Ja Morant, and RJ Barrett all were exceptional college athletes and good students. While these two things do not always go hand in hand, it is important to recognize that their work ethic and dedication is likely what lead them to being successful, and not natural ability. Their attitudes towards life and the game of basketball, along with good parenting and mentoring, have been a recipe for success.

Williamson’s journey to becoming the number one overall pick also stresses the importance of setting goals. He has stated that it was his goal to be in the NBA since he was young, and he worked hard to achieve it. Others have stated that Zion was always shy, but an incredibly hard worker and player. Zion, along with the other players that got drafted by NBA teams all had goals to reach the NBA, and through hard work and dedication, they were able to reach their dreams.

Inspiration can be drawn from many sources and people. The NBA draft showcased how talented and dedicated players made their way from humble beginnings to professional athletes, and what formula they used for success.
